biography

Born in 1987 in Leningrad, Russia, Maxim Zmeyev is a photographer and journalist. He studied at the College of Tourism and Services as well as at Saint Petersburg State University, focusing on journalism, before working for news agencies like Reuters and AFP. His artistic journey took shape at the Rodchenko School of Photography and Multimedia, from which he graduated in 2021. He explores the connections between virtual and physical realities and how digital environments influence and reflect social, identity, and cultural issues. He uses in-game photography to question the authenticity of images and examines the ethical and legal aspects of virtual spaces, particularly regarding intellectual property. His work has been featured in two solo exhibitions in 2020 at the parallel program of the VII Moscow International Biennale for Young Artists and in 2024 at the Getxophoto International Festival in Spain, as well as several group exhibitions in Russia, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Thailand, and France. His works are part of the collection at the Moscow Multimedia Art Museum (MAMM) and in private collections. In 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine, he left Russia for France. He now lives in Marseille and has been a member of the artists’ studio in exile since April 2024.
