Mariam Makhieva is a director of documentary and narrative films, born in Kabardino-Balkaria, in the North Caucasus region of Russia. She lived in Saint Petersburg for twelve years. Her work explores the social processes shaping modern Russia, particularly in her native region. Mariam has won the Best Documentary Feature award seven times. Her films address themes such as justice, women’s rights, human rights, as well as science and scientific thought.
She writes, directs, shoots, and edits her films. Over the course of her career, Mariam has directed more than 12 documentary works, including three feature-length films. Among her films are Across Dark Matter (2024), a documentary exploring the mysteries of the universe and science, and Goryankу (2020), which examines the social realities of her native region in Russia.
