biography

Born in 1990 in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Junior Mvunzi is a multidisciplinary artist. After training in mechanics and electricity, he studied at the Beaux-Arts in Kinshasa. His practice ranges from sculpture and performance to film and music. The artist focuses on transforming electronic and plastic waste to create sculptures, costumes, and jewelry. In his work, he explores the relationship between technology, ecology, and cultural heritage. He has exhibited notably at the Institut Français and the Goethe Institute in Kinshasa (2017 – 2019), as well as Mabele ya Kongo at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris (2024). He collaborates with filmmaker Olivier Loustau on the documentary Des poubelles au musée, which traces his journey between Kinshasa and Paris. A recipient of the Musée du Quai Branly’s Sound Research program, he is presenting his solo exhibition and performance Marie-Louise avec la musika automatika (March 2025 – February 2026). He leads workshops, including at the TALM – Angers School of Art and Design. He is currently represented by the Parisian gallery Les Enfants Terribles. Based in Paris, he is a member of the Agency of artists in exile.
