biography
Born in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1992, Shoty Ndjoli is a visual artist and musician. A recipient of the Prince Claus Seed Award, he develops a multidisciplinary practice rooted in the figure of the mask as well as in sound work, engaging with questions of heritage and identity. His work draws on the traditions of the Mongo people of the Congo, which he combines with a futuristic aesthetic as well as with pop culture. A member of Kinshasa’s underground art scene, his engaged practice is based on the reuse of waste materials and found objects to create instruments, masks, costumes, and audiovisual devices. His work is part of a collective reflection on ecological and political issues.
Shoty Ndjoli has presented his work at the National Museum of Kinshasa, the Goethe-Institut, the Institut Français, the Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles de Kinshasa, the Tarmac des Auteurs Kinshasa, as well as at the Festival Piano Kinshasa and the Festival Kinact. In 2025, he is invited to take part in a residency at the CTM Festival in Berlin (Resynthesizing the Tradition) and presents a solo exhibition at THE WINDOW gallery in Paris. He is a member of the agency of artists in exile.
