biography

Born in Yangon, Myanmar, in 1980, Thoe Htein is a visual artist and illustrator. He studied painting with the Burmese painter Kin Maung Yin. He has a particular interest in Pop Art and comics, inspired by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Phyoe Kyi, Sergio Toppi, Frank Miller and Ashley Wood. His work reflects the problems of Burmese society, and in a comic diary he denounces the Burmese coup d’état, while he is involved with the Civil Disobedience Movement. Since 2011, he has been illustrating comics for various publishing houses, and will be taking part in the 41st Salon International de la Caricature, du Dessin de Presse et d’Humour in Saint-Just-le-Martel in 2022. He also takes part in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including Never Give Up at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) in Thailand and Doh Ayay! at POUSH, Aubervilliers in 2023. Arriving in France in 2022, he is a member of the agency of artists in exile.
